Ginger-lime martini

When the hubby goes out of town, I like to make myself a girly drink of some sort. Usually that involves Chambord, since he’s not a big fan of it, but I almost feel like I’ve exhausted all of my new and interesting options there.

Earlier this week, I had an epiphany: ginger! I love ginger, but the hubby is not a fan. I’d say fresh ginger is one of his least favorite flavors, and he would certainly turn up his nose at a cocktail based on ginger. My Google-fu led me to a few ginger martini recipes, most of which were pretty complicated… so I decided to simplify a bit.

Simple is good.

Rather than make a ginger syrup, I just used simple syrup I already had in the fridge, plus crystallized ginger I already had in the pantry. Ba-da bing. I’m sure it would be more flavorful with the ginger syrup, but I wasn’t exactly planning ahead here.

Regardless, it was a tasty, extra-gingery cocktail — just the kind the hubby would turn his nose up at. Success!

Ginger-Lime Martini
Inspired by this recipe from Giada De Laurentiis

1/2 oz simple syrup
3-5 chunks crystallized ginger
2 oz vodka
1/2 oz lime juice

Combine the simple syrup and ginger in the bottom of a shaker and muddle well. Add the vodka, lime juice, and plenty of ice cubes. Shake vigorously until your hands are freezing their balls off* and strain into a martini glass.

* Just seeing if you’re paying attention!

  1. Ha! Take that you travelling hubby! I also loved the word “google-fu”. You are a google Ninja!

  2. Your hands have dangly bits? I like the sound of this one – I have some crystalized ginger just sittin’ around waiting to meet up with some lime from the fridge and vodka from the freezer. I like the way you think.

  3. Word back and um, ba-da-bing! Looks awesome.

  4. Sounds good to me, ginger and lime are a nice fit. If you want to be spendy, Domaine du Canton ginger liqueur is tasty in cocktails as well…

  5. Yum! What a bummer that your hubby doesn’t like ginger. I guess no gingery miso broth soups in your house? (my favorite veg is broccoli, and my husband doesn’t like that… but I have yet to make any broccoli cocktails. I have made a pea-pod infusion… soon to post)

    • Yeah, he’ll tolerate it in small amounts, though, so I can sneak it in here and there. A broccoli cocktail… hmm. That sounds… not good. But pea-pod I might be able to get on board with!

This is niiiice. I’m enjoying one right now as my other half is out without me. I’d venture to guess that I’m getting the better end of this beverage bargain!

  7. Looks lovely. That is what I often do with cucumbers.
