I was flipping through my cocktail book the other day, looking for inspiration for this week’s cocktail, and I stumbled upon a recipe for the Delmonico No. 1. Intrigued by the stylish-sounding name, I read on. It turns out this gin-based cocktail predates Prohibition, and hails (originally) from New York’s famed Delmonico Restaurant.
This is definitely an old-school cocktail, with a very different taste. Different, but good. It’s heavier on the mixers than I’m used to, but I like it as a change of pace.
Delmonico No. 1
Recipe from the Ultimate Bar Book
1 oz. gin
1/2 oz. brandy*
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Combine ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
* I used my orange-infused brandy and omitted the orange twist.

The word Angostura makes the whole thing sound a thousand times more classy. As if Delmonico didn’t make it classy enough. I envision the roaring twenties and men with cigars and top hats.

You and I are on the same wavelength, once again.
I love when cocktail ingredients come together in ways you don’t expect! Sounds fun to me!
