By now you know about our weakness for bourbon around this house, and I’m on a Cherry Heering kick lately, too, so Putney Farm’s weekly cocktail, the Kentucky Royale, immediately went on my must-try list.
This drink is almost like a liquid chocolate-covered cherry, but not in a too-sweet way. I’m thinking it would make the perfect Valentine’s Day libation for the bourbon lover in your life. Cheers!
- 1½ oz bourbon
- ½ oz Cherry Heering
- ½ oz sweet vermouth
- 1 tsp coffee liqueur
- 2 dashes bitters (chocolate bitters if you can find them; Angostura bitters do fine as well)
- maraschino or brandied cherry, for garnish
- Combine the bourbon, Cherry Heering, sweet vermouth, coffee liqueur and bitters in a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake and strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a maraschino or brandied cherry.
Speaking of Valentine’s Day… be sure to pop on over to LiveMom for my latest article about celebrating it when you’re stuck at home with the littles. There’s a recipe for dark chocolate mousse!

Yum! You had me at “Kentucky”!

That sounds delightful. I love a Manhattan, and this sounds like a dessert-ish version of it.

That’s actually a great way to describe it! It has a lot of the same elements as a Manhattan, but more sweetness due to the Cherry Heering. I think you’d love it!
